NO WIND WAKER SEQUEL
By Lord Mike Antosch
According to an
interview with Shigeru Miyamoto in EGM Magazine,
the next Gamecube Zelda game (not including Tetra's Trackers and Four
Swords) will not have realistic graphics. I know I'm not alone when I say that I
am opposed to it. I hated The Wind Waker, and not just because it had
cartoony graphics.
For one thing, just look at the backstory of The Wind Waker: Hyrule
being buried under the Great Sea? Please! If Hyrule got buried under the Great
Sea,then what about the original Zelda (where Hyrule was invented)? What
about The Adventure of Link (which took place in Hyrule)? What about A
Link to the Past (which obviously took place in Hyrule)?
Also, the game tries to connect itself to Ocarina of Time, but fails
miserably. It says that "a young boy clothed in green appeared as if from
nowhere," Yeah, that's true IF you consider a 19-year-old a "young boy". They
also say, "This boy, who traveled through time to save the land, was known as
the Hero of Time." Not true. Link didn't travel through time. He was in
suspended animation for seven years and he actually aged during that time. He
wasn't called the Hero of Time in the legends because he "traveled
through time (which he didn't)"; the Hero of Time was his given title. If he had
been old enough to fight Ganondorf when he pulled the Master Sword out, he
would've been the Hero of Time all the same.
Another thing that I'm praying is not
repeated is the overworld. I read an article on The Wind Waker that says
everything is closer together than they were in Ocarina of Time and
Majora's Mask. Yeah right! The Great Sea is like 70 times larger than Hyrule
Field, which is larger than Termina Field. It also says that instead of flat
plains, you get multilayered landscapes. Perhaps, but come on, most of the
landscapes are really small and it takes about 10 minutes to sail between them.
You may not get just flat plains, but about 50 miles of ocean in between the
islands is even more annoying.
Those reasons alone might be good enough, but also, how many of you can
honestly say that you preordered The Wind Waker for The Wind
Waker? Sure it got a large number of preorders, but if it wasn't for
Master Quest, it definitely would've only been a fraction of that
number. Ocarina of Time recieved 325,000 preorders and all they
offered was a gold cartridge. Yeah, that'll draw in the people that were
disenchanted about Ocarina of Time (if there were any). If Nintendo wants
to make the next game a Wind Waker sequel, let's see how they do without
offering a preorder bonus fans are practically guarenteed to like.
Not only that, but the game itself was schitzophrenic. The only reason Link
goes on this adventure is to save Arryl. He goes to the Forsaken Fortress, gets
thrown out, goes to Dragon Roost Island, calms Valoo and gets Din's Pearl, goes
to the Forest Haven, rescues Makar and gets Nayru's Pearl, goes to Windfall
Island and eavesdrops on the pirates, gets the bombs, sails all the way back to
Outset Island (how many of you weren't irritated by THAT!?), gets Farore's Pearl
from Jabun, puts the Pearls in their places,
completes the Tower of the Gods, gets the Master Sword, returns to the Forsaken
Fortress, rescues the kidnapped girls, and beats the Helmaroc King. That would
pretty much be the end of the game because Link accomplished what he set out
for.
But no, he has to run into Ganon, get rescued, return to Hyrule, meet the
king, then go through two more dungeons, get the Triforce Charts, get them
decoded by Tingle (shudder), find the Triforce Shards, return to Hyrule, beat
Ganon's Tower, defeat Puppet Ganon, and defeat Ganon. All that other stuff just
seems tacked on. Not only does the game switch gears halfway through the game,
but doesn't do a very good job of it.
Now let's move on to the graphics. Sure, I wasn't a fan of the cartoony
graphics either, but there are other ways that the graphics ruined the game.
First of all, anyone who played the game and got one look at Ganondorf would
agree, the graphics didn't do him justice. In Ocarina of Time, just by
looking at Ganondorf, you could tell that he was one bad dude. The darkened
backdrop, combined with the creepy, yet awesome aura that surrounded him made
him feel really evil (and really cool). Yet I defy anyone to tell me that Ganon
had any of those qualities in The Wind Waker.
Another example is Phantom Ganon. In Ocarina of Time, he had the
exact same aura Ganondorf did and, combined with the creepy environment you
fought him in, he was another creepy, yet cool boss. How many of you can
honestly say the same about the Phantom Ganons in The Wind Waker. Also,
in Ocarina, Phantom Ganon was one tough boss, but in The Wind Waker,
he was so easy, anybody could beat him. It's already stupid enough that you have
to fight seven of them in Ganon's Tower, but I beat all seven of them without
even getting hit once! Is that stupid or what!?
And while we're trashing the bosses, how many difficult bosses were there in
the entire game? TWO!! Puppet Ganon and Ganon himself (who was actually easier
than Puppet Ganon). Every other boss was so easy, you could beat them without
taking more than three hits. Pitiful. And speaking of which, Puppet Ganon and
Ganon were the toughest bosses in the game, but neither of them killed me.
Speaking of pitiful enemies, almost every regular enemy in the game sucked
as well. Just look at the Poes. I know they were annoying in Ocarina, but
no level of annoyingness could top how stupid and annoying they were in The
Wind Waker. Then there are the ChuChus, which just pointless. One of the
biggest blows was the Stalfoses. In Ocarina of Time, they were difficult
opponents and a real joy to fight. However, in The Wind Waker, they were
so easy, you could beat them with just three attacks. The only difficult enemies
(including bosses) were the Darknuts, but even they don't match up to a good ol'
Iron Knuckle.
Okay, I've given lots of good reasons to protest the making of a Wind
Waker sequel, now I need your help. If this article spoke to you, then you
can write to Tatsumi Kimishima, president of Nintendo of America. The address of
