Some would call it loyalty, others insanity, but whatever the rationale, scores of hopeful consumers camped out across the nation today. Lines formed outside of Bestbuys, Wal-Marts, and Targets as early as 4:00 a.m. Wednesday. They were all waiting on one thing; the official launch of the Playstation 3.
Rumors of shortages have plagued the long-anticipated launch date for months, and fans were not taking any chances. Many erected tents along the sidewalk, hunkering down for the chilly November night. Others opted to pile on clothing, coats and blankets. It’s like base camp one at Everest, a camper at Target said. When asked whether they had tried pre-ordering at a specialty store, most answered no. One referred to the practice of pre-ordering as a "waste of money," since they may not get a system until as late as February, depending on further shortages. Everyone waiting seemed firm in their resolve to obtain either a system or a rain-check.
Yet not everyone enduring the elements could be classified as a hardcore gamer. A few were obtaining systems for spouses, grandchildren, or children. Many in line at Target were seeking to capitalize on their purchase. Offers came to some even as they waited. Passers by made offers of as high as $1500 just to buy a spot in line. Most seeking to sell their system planned to list theirs on E-bay for a large profit. “At worst, I’ll break even,” one said. Family and friends proved important to those waiting, as less than favorable conditions arose throughout the day. Campers at Wal-Mart reported poor treatment by upper store management. Most arrived inside, prepared to wait it out in layaway. After a matter of hours they were shuffled outside, berated by the store manager and warned against poor conduct. Customer dissatisfaction was pervasive in the local Wal-Mart line. Spouses and friends came to the rescue bringing food, drinks, and blankets to the underprepared.
A general sense of camaraderie enveloped the campers, individuals sharing stories, hand warmers, and doughnuts. Some made sure to sleep in shifts, due to the threat of muggers. A few reported receiving death threats as they waited. In general, however, strange looks, questions from shoppers and honking cars seemed to be the usual. When asked if they would do the same thing again, the answer from nearly all was a resounding no. One did concede that she would do it again if the weather was warmer. Campers at Wal-Mart expected to wait until midnight. Those at Target, however, would be waiting until 8:00 a.m. Friday.
