Link's Awakening DX Named Greatest Game Boy Game of the Century by IGN!

During the month of January, IGN has conducted a series of polls to determine the greatest videogames of the 20th century.  The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX was named the greatest Game Boy game of the 20th century today.  The Nintendo 64 poll is not over yet, so head over to IGN64 to vote in it. At this time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time holds a commanding lead in the greatest RPG / Adventure title category with nearly 90% of the vote, guaranteeing it a spot in the poll for the overall greatest N64 game.  Ganon's Tower will have the final results of the Nintendo 64 poll when they become available.

Dolphin DVD information!

British Broadcasting Corporation runs a show called Newsround that did a preview of all three of the next generation consoles.  Although very little Dolphin information was revealed, it appears that at least the Japanese version of Dolphin will be able to play DVD movies!  Presumably the U.S. version will be able to also, but we'll have to wait for an announcement from Nintendo on that.  Click here to view the show.  You will need Realplayer in order to watch it, click here to download Realplayer if you don't already have it. Please note that the video is not on the same server as this site, so it may not always be working properly.

Possible Dolphin Delay

A report has surfaced that Project: Dolphin may be delayed until 2001.  It is still unknown whether this is the announcement that Nintendo will be making in just over a week or not.

Wall Street on Dolphin

Investment researchers suggest that the next generation system will arrive in early 2001.

January 18, 2000

While the firm of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter has quite a reputation in the world of big time finance, the company may not know how important sporadic Dolphin information is to N64 owners. As part of its investment research report on Nintendo of America, the company dug up a few precious crumbs of information about the console's launch. Much of the information in the report is speculation on the part of MSDW as to Nintendo's performance potential in the coming year.

The chief bit of information revealed in the report is the firm's belief --remember they tell a lot of people how to spend their money and can't afford to be too wrong too often-- that the Dolphin console will launch "around next spring."

On the positive side, however, Nintendo of America (NOA) suggested in the report that 1-2 million pieces of Dolphin hardware would be available by March of 2001, along with 3-4 million pieces of software. This strongly suggests a Christmas 2000 launch for the system because actually selling that many Dolphin products takes a certain amount of time no matter how conservative Nintendo's projections may be.

For the pessimistic Nintendo console fans, MSDW posed a worst case scenario question to NOA about what would happen if Dolphin was delayed a year from its proposed launch date (as the N64 was). Morgan Stanley Dean Witter paraphrased NOA's response by saying:

…the company's response was that experienced indicated that the market would be stimulated and revitalized by the competition and there was no cause for concern, and that it could reap some latecomer benefits (in terms of price and software).

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's report also revealed that development tools for Dolphin are still scarce with only first and second party companies receiving them so far. The firm's research also suggested that production kits for Dolphin will be made available to third party companies sometime this spring which means specs of the system will be made public in the process. This information is the basis (assuming it takes a year to develop games for the console) for the firm's assertion that the console will come out in Spring of 2001.

The final bit of speculation on the part of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is that the Dolphin could possibly launch in the US before Japan. While Nintendo admits that their products aren't very strong in Japan, the company didn't offer any proof of which part(s) of the world would be receiving the Dolphin first.

IGN64 will certainly have more on Nintendo's next generation console and all of its games as soon as we have relevant information.

The report provided by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is based on information available to the public and no representation is made that it is accurate or complete.

Nintendo has announced the release date for their upcoming handheld system, Game Boy Advance.  The system is scheduled for an August release in Japan, and has a November 1 release date in the United States.  Nintendo will ship one million Game Boy Advance systems on that day, and two million games at the same time as well.  No games for the upcoming system have been announced, but expect to see some games at the E3 show in May, and an even larger showing of the system at the Spaceworld show in Japan which will take place in August.

Dolphin Announcement in 10-15 Days!!!

Peter Main, Nintendo's Vice President of Sales and Marketing has said that Nintendo will make a Project Dolphin announcement in approximately 10-15 days!  It is not known whether this announcement will contain the final specifications of Dolphin or not, although I believe it will either contain the final specs or some very important information about the upcoming system.  Ganon's Tower will have the final specs when they are available.

Zelda Every Six Weeks

Nintendo of America announces its plans for the new Legend of Zelda series for the Game Boy Color.

January 13, 2000

Peter Main, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Nintendo of America, announced in his Nintendo 2000 forecast that the Zelda series being developed in Japan by Nintendo and Flagship is indeed coming to the states.

Tentatively titled Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Series, this adventure will span three games for the Game Boy Color, with the first game (announced in Japan as Legend of Zelda: The Mysterious Acorn: The Tale of Power) set for release in late summer. Six weeks after this release, we will see the release of the second game, tentatively titled The Tale of Wisdom (release in early Fall), and the final game in the series, The Tale of Courage, should make it to market six weeks after that, just in time for Christmas.

The games of the Tri-Force Series have been reported to interact with each other in a way that some things you do in one edition of the adventure will affect the world in another edition through some means of data exchange between the games. But it has also been reported that the games are being designed in such a way that you could play the three adventures out of order and still complete the entire story.

Be sure to check out our full preview of the first game in the series by clicking on the link below. We'll have more information on each of the games as they progress further into development.

Zelda Secret A Hoax!

As much as I hate to report this, it turns out that the Zelda: Ocarina of Time secret that was reported on this site as well as many others is a hoax.  Zelda Power, the site that first reported the secret found out that the e-mail they received from the person who worked on Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a fake.  The interview in Famitsu Magazine that they said contained Miyamoto's hints about the secret did take place, but nothing was said about Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  The interview was instead about Ura-Zelda, the 64DD only game that will unfortunately not be released in the United States.  I'm sorry if I got anybody's hopes up about the secret, next time something like this comes up I will be more careful to check on the authenticity of the news, as I do not want Ganon's Tower to become a rumors site, but rather a reliable source of news on the Zelda series and Nintendo in general.
