Now that Zelda: The Continuing Saga (Gaiden) has been announced and screenshots have been released, it forced me to think about what should be in this game that wasn't in Zelda: Ocarina of Time that will make it the best Zelda game in the series. Although I do believe that Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the greatest game ever made, there are several things that can be done in the next Zelda game to improve on Ocarina of Time and make an even greater game. First, bring back the classic overworld theme!!! That was one of the key things missing from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Although it didn't effect the storyline or the difficulty of the game in any way, it is a key thing that has been in every Zelda game. Although I did like the background music in Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time, I think it could have been used better as the music for one of the regions of Hyrule (Lake Hylia for example), and the classic overworld theme could have been the music in Hyrule field. Next, Nintendo should make the game more of a challenge. In Ocarina of Time, especially when not in a dungeon, there are just far too few enemies to make the game a big challenge. In the overworld, it would almost be surprising to run into an enemy except for nighttime when all Link fought were those skeletons. From the screenshots available, it looks like there will be more enemies in the game. This should make Zelda: The Continuing Saga a lot of fun to play. The battles were the best parts of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, so increasing the number of enemies means more battles and longer battles, which makes the game more fun. Thirdly the beam attack that Link had in the first three Zelda games should return. By looking at some of the screenshots from the beta version of Ocarina of Time, it can be seen that the beam attack was originally intended to be in the game, but was removed for some reason. Even if the beam attack is not very powerful, it would be a lot of fun to use, and would be very useful since there will be more enemies to fight in this game. Another thing Nintendo should do is add more dungeons to the game. My favorite place to be in Zelda: Ocarina of Time was inside one of the elaborate dungeons. For one, there are more battles in the dungeons, and they are a lot more challenging than the overworld is. A frequent complaint about Zelda: Ocarina of Time was that many people thought the game was too short. The only way to lengthen a game is to add levels (in this case, dungeons), or to give the player more things that they have to do in order to finish the game. Adding dungeons also means that there would be more boss fights, which were also an extremely fun part of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Plus since every dungeon contains an item for Link to use in his quest, we could see more items as a result of the extra dungeons. The Pegasus Boots should also return. In Zelda: A Link to the Past, there were so many things you could use the Pegasus Boots to do. You could dash into trees which would sometimes either give you items, you could chase after the mysterious Running Man, you could dash into rocks which would sometimes shatter to reveal a secret passageway. The ability to do these things would make Zelda: The Continuing Saga more fun and possibly more challenging. They could make some item that is necessary to finish the game in the hands of a character who runs really fast or maybe has his own horse that is even faster than Epona is, and the only way to catch him and get the item is to use the Pegasus Boots. By implementing even a few of these ideas, I believe that Nintendo can easily make The Legend of Zelda: The Continuing Saga overtake The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as the greatest videogame of all time. |
