Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil
The graphics in Resurrection of Evil are just as amazing as the graphics in Doom 3. You'll need a high end computer to experience the game in the highest possible quality, but even if you have to turn down the graphical quality, the game still looks great. You'll see trails of smoke following enemy fireballs, when there's a fire somewhere, if you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible video card, you'll actually see waves of heat rising from the flame. When certain enemies die, you'll actually see the flesh being torn off their skeleton, as the bones crumble to the ground.
The sound is outstanding as well, supporting surround sound, you can hear enemies approaching you from any direction, and know where to look without taking unnecessary damage. On my 7.1 surround sound speakers, you can actually hear fireballs whizzing past your head as you dodge them. You'll hear enemy yells and screams, adding to the creepy atmosphere. One of my favorite additions was with the double barrel shotgun, when you shoot an enemy and kill it, you can actually hear the remaining pellets from the gun hitting the wall behind it.
The gameplay in Resurrection of Evil is the same formula that made Doom 3, and really the Doom series as a whole one of the best of all time. It is basically non-stop action from start to finish, with some storyline thrown in, but nothing that takes away from the action, the few cutscenes in the game are brief, and most storyline or instruction is simply given by radio. If you collect PDA's lying on the ground, a few of which are required to open doors needed to progress through the level, you have the option of reading emails stored on the PDA to get even more storyline. Just as in Doom 3, there are also video disc lying around that you can collect and gather more of the story. One of the best aspects of the gameplay in Resurrection of Evil is the boss battles. Each of the bosses requires it's own strategy to defeat it. No more blasting away with everything you have while trying to avoid the boss' attacks. With each boss, you will need to watch the way it moves, then figure out what strategy is necessary to defeat it. Most of the bosses require the use of one particular item in the game, but it is used a little differently each time.
Because work began on Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil before Doom 3 was completed, thankfully there was not a long wait between the release of the two games. Some elements were actually added to Doom 3 that would connect the two games together. If you like the Doom series, first person shooters, or even videogames in general, this game is a must-buy.
The best graphics available on PC right now, excellent lighting effects,
shadows, realism, and more.
Full 5.1 surround sound support, great use of sound effects, really adds
to the atmosphere of the game.
Pays great homage to the original Doom games, lots of fun. The
bosses require more strategy than ever before.
Well designed, again, pays great homage to the original Doom games, even
better done than Doom 3.
