Ganon's Tower

Reviews

Spawn: Armageddon is one of Namco's latest titles,

which uses the comic book character, Spawn as a basis for an excellent action game.  In the game, Spawn must destroy any opposition in his way, and solve a few puzzles to get to the next level, although like most games of it's style, Spawn: Armageddon is based mostly on action rather than puzzles.

The graphics in Spawn: Armageddon are about average for a Gamecube title.  They are not bad by any means, but the game has nowhere near the graphical quality of games such as Starfox: Adventures and Metroid Prime.  The framerate is fairly constant at 30 frames per second with occasional slowdown, but not enough to be concerned about.

The Sound in Spawn: Armageddon is excellent.  Like many newer games, it features Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound support so the game can be experienced in a true surround sound environment.  During cutscenes, the voice acting is done very well, and the background soundtrack is all hard rock and heavy metal, which is also a plus.

Spawn: Armageddon is a lot of fun to play, although some improvements could be made.  The battle system is very well done and it is not difficult at all to perform the various actions needed to defeat each of Spawn's enemies, but it could be improved if there were more variety in the ways enemies needed to be defeated.  Most of the time the axe could be used and Spawn's other weapons were fairly useless with a few exceptions.  Spawn: Armageddon is the first game of its type I have seen that has markers to show where the player has been so that they don't run around in circles trying to figure out where to go next.  In each level there are green markers that turn red once a player has visited them, making it very easy to figure out where to go next, and also to know where you have been in the past, which eliminates a lot of frustration from the game.  Spawn has a variety of moves to use in the game, including wall jumps, double jumps, gliding with his cape to jump across long distances, and also using his chains to grapple onto objects and pull himself towards them.

The level design is also good, but could be improved a little.  Most levels are fairly straightforward, go from one green marker to the next and destroy anything that gets in your way, but a few have some puzzle design with the platforms that can be confusing at times.  Overall though, the levels are a lot of fun to play.

Spawn: Armageddon is an above average action game.  Fans of the Spawn comic book or people who really like action games should definitely buy it, and everybody else should try it out, since despite a few improvements that could be made, the game is a lot of fun to play.
